What makes a good employer?

A few thoughts...

The customer is essential to a successful business. I feel a worthy employee is just as important and should be relatively compensated by their employer.

Respect, Honesty and fairness goes hand and hand.

All opinions are appreciated.

I've nearly always put the customer 1st, employees 2nd, and profit 3rd. On occasion I'll swap 1 & 2 around but I never mess with 3. If I take care of 1 & 2 then 3 will always be there for me in the long run.

I couldn't agree with this more. Having worked for several different companies of different sizes from 3 or 4 employees to several hundred employees, I can say that those who place more interest on the customer's needs than on getting paid have been the most fulfilling. Employers who are more concerned with profit often fall short in the other areas. For instance they are not as likely to offer regular raises to their employers, they are less likely to offer profit sharing plans, insurance, or retirement plans. They also (from what I have seen in my experience) seem to be looking for new, fresh customers because they have a harder time getting repeat work or referrals.

What I do is: Pay employees as much as I can based on their ability. Benefits include holidays, vacation, sick, and personal days. I pay 90% of health insurance. But above all else treat everone how I would like to be treated and also never ask anyone to do something that I don't do. It seems to work for me. When things don't work out for any reason, I always have a clean conscience.

A good employer is someone who finds plenty of work for you to do and pays you what your worth to do it. It is as simple as that if you are an employee. How he gets the work and keeps it are traits of an employer. But as long as you have the work to do and are reasonably compnsated then they are a good employer. Great employers do more for you that that.
