I have a customer that has a delta 480 system and some newer automated equipment with servo motors is giving them nothing but problems unless they install an isolation transformer which gets very expensive. Anyone heard of a way to clean up delta power at the Service level?

What does the source of your 480 delta look like? Is it a Y with the neutral grounded, or a floating delta, or a delta grounded in some other fashion?

What does an isolation transformer do? It breaks a conductive path from the primary to secondary. It also adds a small amount of series inductance in each of the output hot lines. You can ground the secondary in any way you choose that does not create a problem for the load.

An isolation transformer may not benefit noise problems unless the series inductance is of importance. An internal Faraday shield in the transformer may reduce some noise. Moderately fast rise normal mode voltage transients will pass right thru a transformer. This means voltage transients that are additive to the power voltage. These would show up as distortion on the input voltage waveform. If you put a scope across the voltage in question you would see a pulse or damped oscillation superimposed on the basic sine wave.

You should get the machine builder to help solve the problem.

What kind of problems?
