Three phase working on two phase .

I believe this has been discussed before or I may have imagined it. But, can and how could a three phase compressor work if there is only single phase 208v available? Again I think I remember reading about this but I'd rather be sure.

Install a phase converter.

Also there are a lot of VFD's that also work as a phase converter and may in fact be cheaper than a traditional phase converter.
