Three Prong Outlets in the NEC.

Does anyone know how long three prong (grounded) outlets have been required for single family residences?

A friend bought a house in the Scottsdale area which has some three prong outltes; but, which were found to be not grounded on inspection of the house. The wiring is two conductor NM ("Romex").

The house is around 40 years old. I'm wondering if it has been in violation all along.

1962 was the first NEC that required 15- and 20-amp receps in dwellings to be grounded.

Edit to add: Even if the house was built in 1962 or later, you'll need to find out what code, even the NEC, may have been enforced. It may have been a home-grown code at the time. Many places, Chicago comes to mind, still have their own code.

I don't think any edition of the code permitted the use of 3 prong (grounded) receptacle outlets without an EGC, except for the replacement of two wire receptacles, and then only when the 3 prong receptacles had GFCI protection.
