I was wondering how those of you that have had T&M jobs where the GC has you use their jobclock (http://www.exaktime.com/) to punch in and out of the job handle it.

For me it would seem that I need to show up and punch in at 7:30am before I do anything related to the job. Before I would stop at the supply house first since it is on the way but not now.

Also what about the other things that are not done on the sit such as billing, office time, phone calls, travel time, Setting up inspections, etc...

I can see the advantage for the GC in using the device but I can also see them flipping out when those numbers dont match the invoice.

I figure travel times for materials and trips to the job in my labor rate.

We have customers that require us to use their time clocks to punch in and out then we must get the time cards stamped and signed by the managers at the site.

No card no pay, so yes we go there first even if we know we need supplies. Punch in, scope the job out and then go to the supply house.

Take a look at this....you can always add in deliveries/ site logistics etc.

You can add them in but getting paid for them depends on your deal with the customer.

I worked in a surgeon's residence and he had a time clock in the garage for all the help to use no matter if it was the cleaning crew or yours truly, the electrician. If I had extra time for gophering I would just note it on the card and I always got paid. Since I liked working for the guy I tried to get his stuff when I was at the supplier for mine so I didn't have to bump up his bill unnecessarily.

I thought it was a good system since I didn't have to keep track of my hours, just drop my card off when I needed some cash.

jwjrw: How do you figure it into your hourly rate? 1 trip per day? more?

for this specific job, you'll need to get an idea of how much time will be spent off-site handling matters related to the job.

subtract that from your 40 and now you have your average billable hours. multiply that by the dollar amount it takes to reach your hourly rate.

same process you would use to figure a service rate except your average billable hours should be higher.

I think you're not the GCs employee even on T&M.

t & m usually refers to how many hours you pay the per day RELATED to the job not just at the jobsite. most GCs understand that.

Had a guy I was doing a lot of T&M work for and he decided that he wanted my guys and me to use his time clock (I don't think he trusted me to keep track of our time). In the long run it actually ended up costing him more, because I tend to round up and round down.
