Well duh!

Had a string of icicle lights which contains several series circuits of some 48 lamps each.

One section went out, and no matter which lamp was replaced, it burned out immediately.

Finally figured out that all the lamps were burned out, and I was getting current through the shunts--too much current that is. Also noticed that this string contained 44 lamps instead of 48. This I believe caused premature failures, and as each shunt was activated, the voltage across each remaining lamp increased until the point of no return was reached, then they all failed at once.

Duh!

If I don't fix it the first time through I just buy another set of lights......

I converting to LED's. Hopefully, they will last a lot longer than the old style lamps.

I just don't have the patience to deal with trying to find the one lamp that is either burnt out, or just isn't making a good connection.

On top of that , I can never find the right replacement lamps. The bases are always just a little bit different, so they only work well enough to drive you crazy trying to figure out which one is the problem.
