Our company is performing a contract that the specifications calls for a coordination study for an entire sewerage facility, but in the bid documents they only provided the one line diagram for the portion of the facility that was being altered. To what extent would we be required to provide a coordination study?

Does this facility have an emergency (article 700) or legally required standby (article 701) distribution system? If not, then perhaps the NEC would not require a coordination study. So perhaps you need to submit an RFI to ask the client what they are expecting. You can perform a coordination study on just a portion of a distribution system. Indeed, you can study the degree to which two breakers can coordinate with each other, even if the two are sitting on a shelf in the supply room.

From my experience with "brown trout farms", whatever the specifications say is what you are required to perform. I've had to hire out someone to do an entire coordination study on several occasions.

The thing is however, if they have had almost ANY work done in the last 20 or so years, someone has probably ALREADY done that. So if you get hold of that old one, the person doing the new one really only has to do the additions to it.

Submit an RFI for clarification.

I would word the RFI to request the coordination study for the existing plant so you can provide your study that will amend the existing.
If they come back to say that you need to provide a study for the existing plant as well, I would submit a change proposal for the research and engineering to perform this study.
