Owner of a gas station calls, wants estimate to either replace some wiring or certify someone else’s install. She was going to lease a corner of her store out to a guy who wanted to sell sandwiches.

She told the lessee he must have a licensed electrician pull a permit and install. Lessee brings someone in over the weekend without owners knowledge; my guess is that another electrician saw this and called code enforcement, because they showed up Monday and told her they’d shut the business down if it wasn’t corrected.

Anyway, here’s the pics .... I didn’t get one showing the conduit and receps installed, but it’s one 15A 120v and one 20A 120v twistlock.

#10 tray cable .... on the grid all the way across the store, about 80’

I pointed out the violations; she said don’t worry about the estimate, she’d tear up the lease and just paid me to rip it all out.

I had a similar one.

Local plant that builds manufactured homes called me to run a 30 amp circuit to some new coffee maker in their employee cafeteria, when I was done with some other projects they had going on. I finished up the other projects for them, and asked to take a look at the cafeteria circuit they needed.

"Oh, we went ahead and ran the wire for you while you were on the other projects, you just need to connect it at the panel."

I poke my head up above the ceiling tile over the panel. 10-3 Romex coiled on the adjacent tile. Laid 100' across all the other tiles over to the coffeemaker location.

"I'm not touching that. My only choice is to tear it out and redo it. It'll never pass!"

All said right in front of the plant electrician that ran it. Management was there too. They just looked at each other, not sure what to say.

I never ended up doing anything with that circuit, I'm sure it's been running a coffeemaker for a couple years now. I suppose if you build homes all day and have Romex laying around, why not? Right!?!?

So a guy comes in over the weekend, installs 80' of tray cable and a couple of outlets which seem to be dropped in conduit, and, an electrician just happens to drop by the store on that day to get a sandwich and a pop, takes the panel cover off, takes the ceiling tile out to see what's going on, calls the inspector, who he must have his personal number since I'd expect the office is closed on Saturday and Sunday, who then shows up on Monday morning and threatens to shut the business down just because of this?

Come on now.....

I was thinking perhaps the electrician visited the store while the deed was being done.

Good move on the building owner's part to get rid of a tenant who's not abiding by the lease terms from the get-go.

I think it was a little harsh myself.

If she did tear up the lease just because of this, it was probably because someone scared her into thinking this was way more of an issue than it actually was.

Worked at a electronics manufacturing plant, in a sales position, watched a goof (in house handyman) run 1/0 -3/0thhn (can't remember) to feed a Data General mainframe computer through the metal purlins!
I went to my boss (the owner) told him how bad it was; "go back to work". Probably still running today.

Tray cable? Would be an industrial elec. probably done for beer.

The picture looks like the boxes are mounted to the aluminum window frame and the upper right hand tek screw missed its mark.
At least you could go outside and look through the glass and see whether it did or not. :)

Never mind,,, I see it's screwed into the horizontal cross piece,,, my bad.

I think the BO assumed the owner was complicit and thus the threat of closure.

That said, BO and I don’t really get along. He’s a jerk and the entire dept hates him, but he’s super tight with the city manager.

I just don't feel like we are hearing the whole story.

I mean, I think the owner is being honest with me.

See my post just above about the BO. This is the same building dept that once told me they’d “file sanctions” with the state on my electrical license for building a partition wall in my parents office without a permit. So I tend to believe her.
