Does anyone know the mops for doing a torque and cleaning in a 480 volt, 3000amp switch gear. I want to know do you loosen all the connection and retorq

Re: Torque and clean

During electrical preventative maintenance (EPM) of 480 VAC switchgear it is common to.

Clean all insulators with an approved cleaner, vacuum the interior, Verify contact resistance of circuit breakers or fused safety switches, megger the switch board bus (one must be careful not to damage electronic components), test pick up and timed operation of the Ground fault relay and switch operation, UV relay, single phase protection and blown fuse indicators/trip.

We have always verified torque at a setting lower that the factory recommended setting, this assist in finding loose connections, if the previous contractor over torqued the connections there is nothing we can do.

Clean and service the bolted pressure switches (BPS), lubricating per the manufacture recommendations.

IMO proper service of the bolted pressure switches and verify trip operations is key to an efficient EPM. Improper operation of a BPS, partial opening, high resistance power contacts will lead to a major disaster.

This is all done after an IR scan has been completed.
