We are installing 1100' of track (single circuit) with 208y120v service. I am curious about other peoples opions on panel size just for track load.

220.43 Show-Window and Track Lighting.
(A) Show Windows. For show-window lighting, a load of not less than 660 volt-amperes/linear meter or 200 volt-amperes/linear foot shall be included for a show window, measured horizontally along its base.
FPN: See 220.14(G) for branch circuits supplying show windows.
(B) Track Lighting. For track lighting in other than dwelling units or guest rooms or guest suites of hotels or motels, an additional load of 150 volt-amperes shall be included for every 600 mm (2 ft) of lighting track or fraction thereof. Where multicircuit track is installed, the load shall be considered to be divided equally between the track circuits.

Using that rule, I calculate about 230 amps of load for an 1100 foot section. (150 times 1000/2 = 82,500 VA, then 82,500 divided by 208*1.732 equals 229). But that presumes that the load is split equally among the three phases of your 208Y/120 volt system.

What did you mean by saying this is a "single circuit"? If you wanted to power the entire track with a single 120 breaker, you are looking at a breaker rated at 687 amps. :eek: So I must not have understood that part of the question.

thanks for the code section that I already had. I was looking for someone interpretation of it. So thanks to CharlieB. I forgot to use the 3ph formula so mine came out higher, whoops! I aprecitate the help. I mentioned single circuit track for no apparent reason.

Your orginal post is very vauge. You made no mention of any code section or that you had difficulty understanding it. Mike was only doing what is common practice here. When you ask a question, most of the time you will be answered with a code article and some commentary. This is a code forum after all.
