Did I read somewhere that the wiring feeding track lighting needs to be de-rated? or so many VA per circuit and if there is some limitation is it only for commercial/industrial? Any code reference to track lighting would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: track lights

I think you may be talking about Section 220.12(B) of the NEC 2002. It basically states that in other than dwelling units, an additional load of 150 va. shall be included for every 2 ft. of track.

There is nothing I can find regarding derating of the branch-circuit conductors. Part XV of Article 410 covers provisions for track lighting. 410.101(B) basically states that the branch circuit shall not exceed the rating of the track.

Re: track lights

I used to have the misconception that article 220 addressed the branch circuit, until I read it a bit closer and realized that the 75VA per foot rule applies only to the feeder and service calculations.

Re: track lights

I have been told by sales reps from several lighting control companies that I can only put X number of feet of track per branch circuit because of 220. It seems to be a common misconception, and probably one that helps them sell a lot more equipment.
