I found this trades pay scale comparison from Payscale.com. To me these numbers seem low at least for an electrician. But they are showing the median average pay rate across all 50 states I believe..

For a place like New York City those numbers are very low. I would think that Chicago, LA, St Louis, etc. would also have higher pay rates.
 
It's hard to know what you're actually looking at here. Industrial, construction, and union electricians tend to make more money than guys that are doing cable TV and Romex out in the sticks.

Yep...just the benefits in the Chicago area total more than the hourly wage for electricians in all of the categories except supervisor.
 
For techs looking to get BSEE or BSME degrees, rate in Seattle area are 2x for entry level to 2.5 to 3X for senior advanced levels.
