Transfer switch location

I seem to remember an allowance of having a transfer switch located on the supply side of the service disconnect, if the transfer switch is listed as service equipment. I see no such allowance in 230.82, however.

Does anyone know of an exception to this somewhere?

Ryan that is because a service rated transfer switch is a service disconnect.

Can't remember where in the code, but I seem to remember that the ATS must be located immediately adjacent to the main breaker

Bob is right. It is not allowed before the service equipment (230.82) unless it is the service equipment, in which case 230.82 is irrelevent.
