With these topics about generators and connection procedures, here is an interesting phenomena that can develop, and create some thought...What is the maximum voltage that can appear on a transfer switch for a 480 volt system?

Re: Transfer Switch Voltage?

The highest distribution voltage that is in use in the area, unless you are talking about lightning.

Re: Transfer Switch Voltage?

I expected more interest. so I will try and revive this topic.

Situation. 480/277 volt system.

Two power sources connected to opposite terminals of a transfer switch. Sources are naturally in phase but each phase is 180? out of syncronization.

In other words, phase A sine wave of line, is at it's peak positive value. Phase A, of generator, is at it's peak negative value.

The question is what is the maximum voltage between opposing terminals?

Re: Transfer Switch Voltage?

1660 peak-to-peak assuming they use the same ground reference.

With an ATS on a 480/277 VAC 3-phase 4 wire wye system the voltage from utility to generator under normal operation is 277 VAC. Under normal operation the generator is off line. With both sources available the maximum voltage as measured from utility to generator is 960 VAC. From any phase (utility or generator) to ground should be 277 VAC.

Physis, you're right for maximum (peak).
Brian's right for RMS.

I used the question mark because this is too easy for Bennie. I'm thinking there's more to it.
