I am going to install a 200 amp nema 3r transfer switch after the meter pan. It can be manually operated as well as automatically. The other source will be a generator and this has its own over current protection. The question is does there have to be over current protection/disconnect in front of this transfer switch. This is a residential installation. I have gotten three different answers from inspectors. I have looked over the nec code and I need some help interpreting it.

Re: Transfer Switch

So where is the utility side main overcurrent protection?

Large commercial size transfer switches are not listed as service entrance equipment. I have asked this question of factory vendors. No one has admitted making such a device.

Re: Transfer Switch

Cutler Hammer has a 400 amp transfer switch listed as service entrance use, we have installed two of them, under permit and inspection, of course.
Check the cutler hammer and Sq d catalogs.

Re: Transfer Switch

I believe ASCO also makes switches rated as service equipment. These are more in the large comercial and industrial user form.
