transformer at marina

If I put a transformer 500' out on a dock, I have to run a grounding conductor back to ground rod/s back on the land. Does that conductor have to be separate from the feeder to the transformer, or can it be in the same cable feeding the transformer?

I don't believe there is anything in the NEC that prohibits this method. I don't think that would be of the best design considering the intended purpose of the GEC, but not necessarily unsafe.
