Are there any code issues with installing a step-down transformer (480 to 120/208V)inside the ceiling cavity (space between the slab and drop-down ceiling) of a computer room? Thanks

Re: Transformer installation

Depends on the size or KVA rating of the transformer. 450.13 (B) allows the installation if the KVA rating does not exceed 50 KVA, and ventilation and separation from combustible materials requirements are met.

Re: Transformer installation

Not a code issue, but a design concern: make sure you will not have magnetic fields from the transformer interferring with computer monitors (tube type monitors, LCD are ok).

why is 450.13(B) liited to only 50 KVA &

is there an exception taken for larger transformers i.e. 75 kva installed in hallow space?
