Just completed a 5 story building, each floor has a 75KVA K13 transformer installed. All floors are unoccupied(i.e. no load on xfmr). One transformer is making a loud noise(have not actually heard this myself, has been commented by architect). What could be causing this xfmer noise, will it go away when load is added? Why aren't the other xfmrs making a noise? Any solutions or does the xfmr need to be replaced?

Re: Transformer Noise

bwyllie, this may or may not be the problem, but suggest to the installer to loosen the shipping bolts. (these are the bolts squeezing the isolators) I know this seems to be to simple of a solution, but before much time is spent trying to look for an "electrical in nature" reason, I would try this first.

Re: Transformer Noise

thanks for the tip, any "easy solution" would be great since this transformer is mounted above.

Re: Transformer Noise

Also look for loose tinwork covers. I use friction tape around the edges of loose covers which works well. (Yes guys they still make it and it is sometimes useful)
