Transformer on a dock

555.7 in the 2008 code states that service equipment shall not be on the floating structure. I have seen many marinas over the years, new ones included that have transformers on the dock. Anyone know of an exception to this?

The transformers you have seen were not "service transformers." They were "distribution transformers," and are allowed per 555.5. To confirm that they are allowed, you may need to read the definition of "electrical datum plane," in 555.2, specifically item (3).
