Re: Transformers
I believe an "auto-transformer compensator" is a voltage regulator made with an autotransformer.
Small, personal computer size, voltage regulator/constant voltage transformers are built using ferroresonant isolation transformers.
Eventually the KVA size of ferrosant transformers becomes cost prohibited. At this point some manufacturers will use auto-transformers with multiple taps and an automatic electronic tap changer to provide a "constant voltage".
Utilities have the need for medium voltage control and very large KVA transformers, however they do not need the speed and fine voltage control of a computer style voltage regulator. They use multi-tap autotransformers with automatic mechanical tap switches to compensate for voltage changes caused by the loading and unloading of their distribution grids.
