When running single conductors from a cable tray to a piece of equipment, is it required to run the conductors in a conduit? Or can the conductors be run in free air between 1ft-3ft from the tray to the equipment enclosure and enter the enclosure through a chase nipple? Chase nipple is then sealed to keep debris from entering. Per article 392.30 B 3, this appears to be a suitable installation. The condutcors are secured at the point of transition from the tray, and all 3 conductors with ground are in the same chase nipple. I'm being told that it is not in compliance with article 312.5C. My understanding is that 312.5C is specifically related to CABLES and not single conductors. I would appreciate any input that may be available.

Sounds ugly to me, and, I wouldn't do it that way even if it was code compliant, which I doubt it is.

I've never had to do this but I believe I saw conduit stubbed up into the side of the tray parallel to it for a few inches and clamped to it. It had a bushing on the end where the conductors entered.

If I had to do it that's what I would do.
