A colleague just gave me the following rule of thumb and I wanted to see if anyone else out there was familiar with or agreed with it.

He said that for a given voltage at 4000 Amps, the corresponding KVA happens to be approximately equal to the optimal distance for that voltage.

In other words, beyond that point, you'd be better off going to a larger voltage from a cost stand point.

As for the "optima numeric analysis" question, ah - no? Never heard of it.
 
its a mathematic process where you can find the optima point. In your case the cost +distant vs. voltages. THe process will factoring in all the unknows like price of conductors, labor, losses and other.
