I have a 200/200 transfer switch feedig a resdence with 200 amp sevice. The transfer switch is directly under the meter the service is 10 feet away. The inspector says the transfer switch now qualifys as the entrance and ground and neutral must be separated from there on. I believe under article 230.82 (4) the 200 amp panel remains the entrance and sepatrating neutral and ground is not necessary. Whats your opinion?

IMHO, the inspector is correct if the transfer switch disconnects the service conductors. I'm not sure how 230.82(4) comes into play:confused:

We had an inspector allow us to leave the house panel as is based on this same article, altough, I think you may have meant (5) instead of (4);

(5) Taps used only to supply load management devices,
circuits for standby power systems, fire pump equipment,
and fire and sprinkler alarms, if provided with
service equipment and installed in accordance with requirements
for service-entrance conductors.

That ruling was based on extenuating circumstances, so I was ok with his interpretation, but the vast majority of AHJs you talk to will tell you anything beyond the TS are now considered sub-fed and must have separate neutrals and grounds.

Is the transfer switch service rated? If it is the neutral-ground will be bonded in the transfer switch. The wiring from there to the main panel will need to be 4 wire and the neutral and ground isolated. Then all branch circuits in panel will need to be separated.

If the transfer switch is NOT service rated then a disconnect must be installed between the meter and ATS. The neutral-ground would be bonded there and every thing past it would be separated. 4 wires

The same will apply to the generator wiring. More than likely the ATS is not switching the neutral. The neutral and ground are not bonded in the gen. Your neutral and EGC will stay isolated in the disconnect from the gen. into the ATS.
