Re: Tray Cable Uses

To: zztop, well your question should spark some activity. I worked in industry for many years, so I have a great deal of knowledge of cable trays in the industrial setting.
But your question is, "can cable trays be used in a residental setting". I have researched Article 392 in the 2002 NEC. In the 1999 code it was Article 318. I cannot find anything that will not permit you to use cable tray in a residence.
My only concern would be, where you installed it.
For example: In a basement, or in a attic would be ok. But, if you were to install a vertical run in a partition, you would have a chimney effect.
I know, that in industry, we would have to put a seal off to stop the chimney effect in case of a fire.
I personally think that it is a good idea, properly installed.

Re: Tray Cable Uses

A cable tray is not a wiring method, it is a support method. It can be, and is used in residential applications for structured wiring. However, tray cable is restricted in use.
There are wire basket trays that would be much less expensive than the ladder type we typically think of for cable tray

The reason for my original question is that while conducting an inspection I found tray cable being used to feed a sub panel in a residence. What Code article would be applicable for this installation?
