Trench order.

Can you tell me what order, if there is one, if a 120V plastic conduit and a water line occupy the same trench? What depth should the conduit be and should the water pipe be above or below the electrical conduit?

The conduit must be installed per 300.5. The other piping can go next to it in the trench if you like. There is no required separation. PVC conduit has different depth requirements depending on a number of factors, these are outlined in Table 300.5.

Bury the water line below the frost line for your area. The 120v doesn't care if it's below the frost line, just as long as you comply with 300.5.

Okay you Alaska boys; in northern Alaska how deep is the frost line?

How many of you guys bury water line anywhere? :p

Seems like I've seen some Corps of Engineers studies that show 2000' in some areas north of the Brooks - don't quote me, cause I don't have a reference.

My water line? I'm 70" from the well to the house, down 4'. Line is 1" PEX, heat traced,5W/ft self regulating, 1/2" closed cell foam wrap, 3" sprayed foam overall.

I'm hoping it is low maintenance.

yo Larry ... in south central ... Anchorage / Mat-Su Valley we bury our water lines at 10 feet ... they still freeze sometimes if we don't get a good snow cover for insulation ... this last winter was a cold one ... 5 weeks straight at my place below zero (Wasilla) ... argh ... m

I'm out here on the left coast but up at 7000' it gets cold. The water has to be at least 36" & elect. at 300.5 depth. Local utilities require a 12" separation between pipes, conduits & cables (either vertical or horizontal) to facilitate repairs when needed.
