Often "triplex" refers to utility cables such as shown below but any 3 conductors twisted together can also be "triplex cable"
 
Mention "triplex" to any electrician in my area and they will think in terms of the illustration in post 2.
i think when i am asked "you have some triplex" my response is "triplex for what exactly?"

Well, the same could be said for "You have some wire?"

Triplex to me has always been 3 separate wires or cables twisted together, no jacket. In fact we used to "triplex" our cables in a lumber mill I worked at so that they didn't rattle in the conduits when we started big machines like gang saws and chippers. Lay out all three cables on the ground, tape them together at each end and clamp one end into a vise, then chuck the other end into a pipe threader and turn it on. Twisted them together very nicely. Made anything larger than 2/0 a bear to pull though...
