I managed to muddle through and get it open.  A little plastic door with two barbed tabs holds the lamp cord against two little knives which pierce the insulation and make contact with the copper.  Worse than a backstabbed receptacle.
Kleins are too fat.  Side cutters work just fine if you cut the cord and throw the socket away.  A 4 pound hammer ought to work as well.
