I just bought an Amprobe ACDC-3000 clamp meter. It has some uniquie capabilities my Fluke 337 lacks. My question is why does the manual insist I must disconnect the test leads before taking a current measurement? All of the manuals for my clamp meters have said the same thing. I am cautious not to let the probes touch anything live while taking current readings. Is this procedure necessary?

Worn out bannana jacks are one reason why I retired the Fluke 337. Right now, I run service. I use my amp clamp all day (along with my Wiggy). What is the hazzard if I leave the leads plugged in?

BTW. This forum has made me a much better service tech.

Removing your leads from their jacks is for safety reasons. Those jacks will be part of the ciircuit - if it is live, you could hurt yourself, someone else or damage your meter. You should not be taking readings with the leads still connected - no matter how safe you may tend to think you are.

Fluke has some good safety info on meters at their website - you should take advantage of it.
