I need a good definition and where it can be found in the NEC. :confused:

1. Low Voltage
2. Nominal Voltage
3. High Voltage.

Re: True Definition of high voltage

Low voltage (LV) is below 1000 volts.

Medium voltage (MV) is 1000 to 100 KV.

High voltage (HV) is 100 t0 230 KV.

Extra high voltage (EHV) is 230 KV to 765 KV.

These values are from ANSI/IEEE Standards.

Re: True Definition of high voltage

It really depends on the purpose for which you intend to use the terms. The article 100 definitions do not include either of the terms. 110.34(B) appears to describe (I?ll not say ?define?) ?low voltage? as being below 600 volts. In the context of mobile homes, 551.2 defines ?low voltage? as being below 24 volts. In the context of elevators, 620.5(D) defines ?low voltage? as being below 30 volts rms, 42 volts peak-to-peak, or 60 volts DC. In the context of cables, 328.2 defines a ?medium voltage cable? as being one rated 2001 volts or higher. 490.2 defines the term ?high voltage,? for the purposes of that article, as being over 600 volts nominal. :confused:

Re: True Definition of high voltage

The main purpose of the question was on labeling warning unauthorized personnel of a shock hazard. I realize that the intent of 110.27 is to warn personnel of the hazard but some persons do not want to place "Warning High Voltage" on panels under 600V. Thank you for your reply

Re: True Definition of high voltage

On a couple of different sites I was on in northern VA, whenever signage was put on doors to electrical rooms, if the voltage did not exceed 600 volts we were not allowed to install a sign that said "High Voltage."

This is first hand knowledge simply because I put up a Danger: High Voltage sign on a 277/480 temporary shed and was then told to replace it with one that read Danger: Electrical Hazard to be in compliance with somebodie's regs.

Maybe OSHA?

Posting signs that are not technically correct will desensitize the effect of the warning. The old "cry wolf syndrome".

On the other hand, posting a sign "Low Voltage" will lead to the same conclusion. Imagine a sign "Caution Low Voltage" raising any red flags.

How about "Caution: 600 volts";

"Caution: 1000 volts";

"Caution 30,000 volts";

"Caution 120 volts"

Etc.?

Would it be a big deal to spell out the volts?

Re: True Definition of high voltage

We just did some repairs at a motel which had three service's 240 grounded "B" 120/208, and single phase 120/240. The fire marshal made us label each panel in the place with the phase and voltage. and put warning label on each one with a sign on the door to each power room.

Bennie I can not speak for Wayne's area, but in my area the Fire Marshall is all knowing, all powerful, comply with him or suffer the wrath. :roll:

You want a certificate of occupancy so the customer can move in?

Just say yes to whatever this guy wants, do not bother with why.

No it is not right, and yes you could fight it, but getting a reputation with the GCs for being difficult and late is not a good thing.
