Hi,
I have a bunch of questions related to transformer stations that I was hoping someone could
answer.
1. What is a switchgear really? from what I understand it is a combination of circuit breakers and
switches. How is this different from the protection and control system? Ie from what I know
the p&c system is made up of relays and various breakers switches on feeders to clear/isolate faults.
How is a switchgear different from this? Why is it one “contained” unit?
2. Busbar. Busbar is just a high current carrying conductor that outgoing feeders come off of?
It also powers equipment? if this is the case what is it powering? the switchgear? CTs/PTs?
Why are they not powered by the electricity flowing through them already?
3. A recloser opens for a brief time to clear the fault and then recloses, staying closed if the fault cleared.
As far as circuit breakers go, they will not auto reclose correct? does this mean when a CB trips it must be
reset manually through the SCADA system? What is the process for clearing a basic overcurrent fault?
4.What are some tests you can perform on equipment to ensure it is working correctly?
IE you wanted to install a CT and you need to test it before you install it?
Could anyone point me towards some reading material of testing station equipment? Furthermore
what are tests you would perform AFTER installation to verify correct functionality?
Feel free to tell me I know nothing. I am just trying to learn and understand stations a lot better.
Thanks!
