I have read a lot of old threads involving TV mast lightning protection and I'm a little puzzled. I have a single family house that's needs to have lightning protection for it's dish. If I ran a #6 from the mast and piggy backed it to the GEC from the ground rod is this acceptable or do I should I go to the water meter?

The rules for the antenna are in Art 810. It lists about 5 locations where the bonding jumper for the mast can terminate, it does not have to be 6.
If you use coax, those rules are in Art 820. You have to bond the cable sheath and use a listed impulse supressor, to about 5 locations. If the IS is more than 20 ft from the GEC connection, then you run 6 AWG between the two.
Your objective is to create a single point ground between the communication systems and the GEC, to minimize the difference of potential in a lighting strike.
Failure to properly bond can cause damage to your $3,000 TV.
