TV Sattelite Dish

Will grounding a TV sattelite dish by running a bare copper wire from a coax grounding block to a cold water pipe be sufficient for lightening protection, or does it have to go to a ground rod? If a ground rod is necessary, how deep must it be set in the ground?

The requirements for antenna grounding are in NEC section 810.21, its fairly straightforward. Is this application for you or a customer?

If you are advising persons on the installation of satellite dishes then you need to be familar with the NEC rules in Art 810 and 820. If you are not familar or qualified, then you should not advise customers. The subject is more than we can cover in the forum, to start with you will need a copy of the NEC. In some states you would have to licensed and bonded as an electrical contractor. Proper installation and grounding can prevent fires and equipment damage from lightning strikes.

Lightning protection is field all in it's own and requires very spiecal understanding. This is why there are some states that require a spiecal licenses and testing to do that kind of work. The NEC is a bare mininum code that is only for the protection of structure and the people in side. It is not for the protection of equipment. This type of protection requires A lot of knowlage that is more than what can be provided here in these forums and or in the NEC. as Tom has said

Here is a site that will give you just an idea what it takes.

Lightning Protection Institute

You will see that there is alot of knowlage needed.
