hey bob ; i did watch the monster house also and i can see the one of the electrican say the same thing about walking code book . it almost make me laugh but really he was serious about doing it right in the first time .. btw i noticed most monster house show useally have at least a electrican there all the time i belive that they do that for safety reason .
yeah i know few peoples inslusted me as walking code book and i know how they feel about . well i don't feel embarrased or sink to their level. all i did say just rescherch or look up the code then we are right on the level with codewise.
and i deal with inspecter alot few peoples asked me how i deal with it? i say just stay on their level and be foward with them and if you know your inspecter very well then all i do is ask them if something is not right or kinda of bind then i check out with inspecter but reality i don't debate with inspecter without something back you up soildly .

The only Monster House I came across had the electrician holding up the progress of the whole job. It was a simple job-- but he took forever. He kept insisting he was qualified. After days of BS he finally caved in and said he was not qualified nor even an electrician. They quickly replaced him and they had to do a crappy carpentry job to make up for lost time after a qualified electrician buttoned up the electrical work. I think it only left one day for finish carpentry. The first "electrician" seemed to have some kind of mental and/or substance abuse problems.
I saw that, and the funny part is I thought about coming here and posting it because I was so happy that sparky stuck to his guns. The DIYer he was arguing with even used the line "I've done it this way before and it's worked!"
I think the DIYer was supposed to be an "expert" in installing the disco light floors. I wonder how many of his past clients have put in calls to their local AHJ after seeing that show!

if you seen the monster house show last night they had a "licensed general contractor" not a electricican doing the wiring on the show, not only did he do framing but he hard piped the wiring for lighting and a set of moving door.
In CA if the GC owns the contract he can do any portion of the job he chooses to. He can only take contracts with three or more trades.
It would depend on the contractural relationship between the Discovery Channel and the GC. Did they hire him as a GC to oversee the whole job, or did they hire him as a sub to just do framing & electrical?
If he is hired as a sub to do less than three trades there may be a licensing violation.
Additionally, if he was just hired as an electrician he would have to be a Certified Electrician as CA now requires Certification of all Electricians.
Was the show filmed in CA?
Regardless of legal ability he should not touch electrical work unless he is very sure of what he is doing, or at least seeks the advice & oversight of a qualified electrical contractor or certified electrician.
