tvss devices

can anyone tell me why a computer might be adversly affected with tvss devices? One of the trouble shooting steps in trying to fix it tells me to unplug the computer from any tvs devices. I just curious as to excatly what they do that might affect a computer?

i think what they're getting at is mode 2 tvss that shunt transients to the egc.
