Hello everyone ,
I Have two houses on one lot there is one service lateral feeding two sets of service entrance conductors. and one on front house to a meter to panel, one to rear house to meter to panel. now the owner wants to upgrade the service in the front house but the power company wants both meters on the front house now. so I am thinking that this is okay to bring my se cable to my double meter enclosure then one se cable down to basement panel for front house then in sch 80 from meter down underground to rear house up and pop through to other panel the distance to rear house is 70 foot. here is my question can i take off from meter to rear house with out a disconnect for rear house mounted on front house. we use to do this all the time and treat each as it's own service But i have not run across this in a while and was wondering if it is still okay, i think it is for residential, can someone tell me if this is right or wrong please thank you.And what code sec.

Re: two houses on one lot only one service help me out here

230.70 A 1 (readily accessible location)
230.70 B (marking of service disc.)
230.40 excp.1 - 5
and
230.72 A (grouping of disc.)
Some areas limit the distance of unfused service conductors to 5,8 10 ft.Check with local ahj and poco.
230.70 A 1 allows you to bury the conduit and enter the second panel as an extended back to back. Some area`s require there be an exterior disconnect so again check with local ahj.
also 230.72 C makes sure there is access to the disc. for that structure.

Thanks I am going to read 230.70 etc. and propably will call the ahj on this one.

Re: two houses on one lot only one service help me out here

I spoke with the AHJ the local Electrical Inspector and He has told me to treat both buildings as a new service and said no disconnect needed for the rear building, just leave the meter in sch. 80 go underground come up and pop through building directly into new panel.Which will have a main breaker. Just so you all know, if you run into this. Check With Your AHJ First.

Re: two houses on one lot only one service help me out here

Sure made sense, the undergound to the second panel is an extended back to back service and they really like it when asked how they want something done.Makes both of your lives easier and builds respect for down the road situations.
