I have a 500 kVA dry-type transformer, 480-V down to 208/120-V. Normally one secondary feed from the TF to a 1600-amp protected switchboard. The contractor is having difficulty procuring a switchboard this size, has asked if (2) 800-amp secondary connections can be made on the transformer instead to (2) 800-amp switchboards.

Is this allowed by code?

Won't the inrush current on the transformer trip the 800's?

Thanks in advance for any advice

The code allows multiple connections off the secondary as long as each one connects directly to the transformer, 240.21(C).

Inrush occurs on the transformer primary, the protective devices on the secondary will not see it.
