Two type of arc faults

I was wondering if someone could explain the differences in the two types of arc faults that the breakers should detect.
 
Parallel arc faults will happen with a short circuit or ground fault.

Series arc fault would be when a wire is cut and there is an arc between the conductor. Imagine a nail cutting the hot conductor of a cable causing an arc between the two ends....
