Are you sure that you have Type IV construction?
Type IV construction is heavy timber construction.
I would say that if the attic contains mechanical equipment that exposed NM cable in that attic would not meet the requirements of 334.10(3) which requires the NM cable to be concealed within walls floors or ceilings.
