I'm investigating the use of a particular cable assembly in Class I, Division 1 locations. The cable is "Marked" as ITC (Tray Cable) and not ITC-HL (Tray Cable for Class I, Division 1 locations). The cable is pre-assembled with with fittings on both ends. One side is connected to an Intrinsically safe port of an instrument and the other side would connect to an Intrinsically safe calibration instrument. The idea is that the instrument is mounted high off of the ground and this cable allows a technician to calibrate the instrument from ground level.
I'm looking at the 2008 edition of NFPA 70, Article 504 "Intrinsically Safe Systems". Section 504.20 "Wiring Methods.", seems to imply that I can use any wiring method suitable for "unclassified" locations with a restriction on the sealing of the cable connectors on each end.
The cable isn't installed in a tray with other "Non-Intrinsically" safe cables, so section 504.30 doesn't seem to apply. Also the cable isn't installed in a tray but rather will be installed using clamps fastened to structural members.
My question is...
1. Can I use this cable for Intrinsically safe devices in Class I, Div 1 locations even though it's not ITC-HL listed?
2. Where can I find the restrictions on the installation requirements for Tray Cable?
3. If it's not installed in a tray what are the limitations?
Regards,
Dan
