We are laying out design for an installation which will include long (500 ft+), outdoor runs of cable tray. Some portions will be in Class I, Division 2 locations. Tray is ladder type, and covered. We don't do a lot of cable tray install.

I was intending to spec Type TC-ER, but was asked to evaluate MC cable as well. What would be the benefits of MC in this application? (I assume, but have not confirmed it is higher cost). What do you generally see specified or installed in this environment.

Note none of our installation is in Class I Div 1, so that MC-HL is not a requirement.

Most cable will be for controls - multi conductor #14 or multi-pair/triad #16.

Thanks for any input.

In Class I, Division 2, it is only an installed cost evaluation. (Unless there is a need for a "warm-fuzzy' feeling from MC.)
