I know that it is a no-no to secure cable to gas pipe and lack of a grommet/protection when passing through sheetmetal - however, what is the general requirement for NM cables behind a boiler front cover? Are there heat concerns (even with NM-B)? DSCF6549.JPG

Technically a violation but 25 years ago that's how they were done. We always use MC cable or AC cable but would support it on the pipe. No issue with the temperature of the conductors. Given that the installation appears to be at least 25 years old I wouldn't mention it as a defect.

The relay and control boxes should have been installed on the outside side of the boiler, looks like there is plenty of room. What do you want from plumbers doing electrical?

I'm guessing that the one on the left is factory installed and contains the aquastat.
