My experience with Romex or NM cable is limited.

My question I guess is what is the definition of Embedded? "NEC 2002 334.12 Uses not permitted"

I would like to know if you can use cable type
NM-B for branch circuit wiring within a brick wall not brick veneer.

I would say that 334.12 (8) means exactly what it says,
It cannot be surrounded by or enclosed by concrete mix of any type,
also look at 334.12 (10)(b)&(c) and it will elaborate more.

If you are talking about air voids, it is permitted.

2002 NEC 334.10 Uses Permitted.(A) Type NM. Type NM cable shall be permitted as follows:
(1) For both exposed and concealed work in normally dry locations except as prohibited in 334.10(3).
(2) To be installed or fished in air voids in masonry block or tile walls

The original posting emphasized embedded use of NM cable.

Re: Type NM cable inside brick wall

Type UF cable is allowed in corrosive environments NEC 2002 article 340.10 (3).

However it is not allowed to be embedded in cement, concrete, or aggregate. NEC 2002 article 340.12 (8)

Any ideas why it isn't allowed?

I figure the same reason will appy to NM cable.

What is aggregate?

Re: Type NM cable inside brick wall

There are three types of NM cable, one is for use in cinder walls per Art 334:
B) Type NMC. Type NMC cable shall be permitted as follows:
(1) For both exposed and concealed work in dry, moist, damp, or corrosive locations, except as prohibited in 334.10(3)
(2) In outside and inside walls of masonry block or tile
(3) In a shallow chase in masonry, concrete, or adobe protected against nails or screws by a steel plate at least 1.59 mm ( in.) thick and covered with plaster, adobe, or similar finish

I have never seen NMC cable. Does anyone know if its available?

I have never seen NMC either, but I hope it is easier to pull than UF.300.5 now makes all cable in conduit underslabbed to be listed for wet location.

Concrete more or less.

NMC can not be under slabbed either, it is OK for damp, not wet locations.

Would it be easer to just use THWN?

That's OK your answer was more to the point anyway. :D

Aggregate

a : an aggregate rock

b : any of several hard inert materials (as sand, gravel, or slag) used for mixing with a cementing material to form concrete, mortar, or plaster

c : a clustered mass of individual soil particles varied in shape, ranging in size from a microscopic granule to a small crumb, and considered the basic structural unit of soil.
