Type SOOW

I currently have a supervisor who is insisting I run Type SOOW cable under a housing area (over 100') to hook up a 10 ton package unit. I have protested stateing that that(SOOW) is considered a flexible cord and not alowable as permenant wiring (aka 10 ton ECU?). I have to sign off on the inspection in a military enviroment which holds the installer accountable. I might add that the unit is ducted in hard duct, not flex, which would lead me to believe it is permenant. Just wanted to make sure that Im thinking correctly here. Thanks!

For all intents and purposes, the military is it's own AHJ.

It's possible that they have decided that for whatever reason that it is appropriate to run this particular piece of wiring in cord.

In general I think you are correct in your assertion that the NEC would not permit this kind of installation.

I am not sure just how you would be held accountable as the installer if your supervisor was in error about this kind of thing. It's just a mistake on his part. Not the end of the world. It's also not as if doing it this way endangers anyone.

Would you feel better if it was UF?

If you have the 2008 NEC have him read Article 400.8
or let him install it so he will be accountable.
