UF Can’t be used indoors

False. Where does this stuff come from :? 340.10 specifically says "installed as non metallic sheathed cable"

Actually it is somewhat reasonable for someone to think this, as some underground cables (USE, unless dual rated) does not have the flame retardent properties for use indoors.

I agree with electrofelon. There are some cables which are not to be used indoors, however UF cable is specifically permitted to be used where NM-B is permitted.

Somebody probably ran it in a plenum ceiling thinking if it was uf it would be okay... he heard it wasn't... maybe that's how he got that info

Iirc, a recent past code cycle addressed UF coming in from outside to terminate in an indoor outlet ......~RJ~

Why would you want to? Hard stripping stuff.

It is useful where part of the run is inside and part outside. The splice can be avoided. I actually had an HVAC contractor tell me a minisplit cable from the outdoor unit to the indoor head could NOT be spliced. I did not believe it. A wire doesn’t know if it is spliced or not. I didn’t debate it.

It's only slightly harder than NM if you know how. I'm constantly teaching people how to properly strip UF. I don't why it's such a secret.

Interestingly, there are several Youtube videos on how to strip UF. The one below is the only correct one. (However the guy demonstrating is not safely using his knife.)

'Cept that only works with 1x/2 cable, and fresh, new cable that hasn't been twisted, crunched, bent six ways to Sunday.

I strip three conductor cable the same way. Once the cable is split open the conductors will zip right out. You have to pull them toward the thinnest portion of the jacket.

Yes, bends in the cable do make this harder. Straightening the cable before stripping will help.

I agree new uf is pretty easy to strip, it's the old stuff that can be a bear.
