Can anyone show or tell me if UF cable is allowed or not allowed in a comercial application for Parking lot lights ?

Re: UF underground Wire

Hi,

I do not see where it would not be allowed per your question. However, the inspector may be concerned with backfill since it is in a parking lot which typically has stone as a bed. This also may be his concern as to the protection from physical damage requirement.

I don't see where it wouldn't be allowed, but IMO it is bad design. If the cable goes bad, your busting up a parking lot to try and replace. Conduit is the preferred way.

Re: UF underground Wire

Install the conduit. I work at a mail processing plant that is 8yrs old and all our hps parking lot lights are fed with UF.I have had to cut up the parking lot 3 times so far and replace the the UF feed with pipe and wire.

There are local jurisdictions that only permit 12 awg or larger for commercial work, check with your AHJ. The NEC does not have that restriction. Bill's example is a very good reason for installing a conduit for this type of application, and will save you 'face' the first time there is a problem in the future.
