There are various UF splice kits available. None particularly better or worse than another. I often prefer to make my underground splices and repairs in a Quazite box, but I've used a number of UF splice kits with equally good results.

I prefer the UF splice kits that do NOT require a torch...

We've used the splice kits in the past and they seem to work well (meaning that the spices are still working after 15 years or so). As Dennis mentioned the need for GFCI protection would be for cable installed less then 18" but 12" or more inches deep for a dwelling. This would allow you to circumvent the 18" UF burial depth requirement by using GFCI protection.

UFC2B from Erico @ about $11.50 - heat shrink style.
ESUF from NSI @ about $34.50 - gel filled.
We have used the heat shrinks for years with a no failures that I am aware of. The gel filled are relatively new.
Both are for one cable in and one cable out.
