Hi everybody,I want to do a lightning arrestion system on a A frame house[my camp] about 2400 ft asl for now its the highest/only point, its in the planning stage. If I use a convential point and rod system its in soid bedrock holes have to be drilled and chemicals added checked and maintained . Has anyone ever made a uford ground /wire buss in the footer no rods and cadwelded taps for points and chimmney grounds and the electrical service and generator the way we do it in an industrial application? Also has anyone had any experience with pole top units that create a field over top everything that lightning wont pennetrate sorry I dont know the proper term for it but have seen them in the trade magazines. Thanks for your input cm

CM, are you talking about using a "UFER" ground? UFER grounds work well for a ground electrodes for a service, but in my experience they do not work well for lightning protection. The problem I have seen if you do take a strike, the moisture in the concrete vaporizes and cracks or explodes the concrete foundation.

What I have found to be usefull in rocky conditions with fiber regenerator sites is just a simple ground ring, and use CAD welds to bond the down conductor and close the ring. If you want to take it a step or two further you can use bentinite clay to backfill the ring, and use ground rods every twenty feet, but I have found it doesn't really add anything, as both methods seem to work equally.

There are several types of lighting protection systems available. Unfortunately only one is recognized by the NFPA. That is the air terminal type as described in NFPA 780 and that guy named ...... oh yeah, Franklin.
There are lots of packages available for various size homes. Do the search as mentioned before. Also try the words
lightning protection franklin
