I have an old building with an existing Lightning Protection systems (just air terminals and conductors). It has it's old UL Master Label, however we are going to have to add air terminals to bring the building up to code, and obtain the new UL Master Label certificate.

Ok, here's the question. I heard that as of 2009, you will not be issued an UL Master Label certificate if you do not have TVSS or renamed SPDs at the service entrance. What do I do if it is an existing building, is there a grandfather clause somewhere? I'm taking over this project for a colleague, and I can't just not do it.

I'm trying not to cost the client any more.... :(

I would bet the SPD does you more good that the rest of the LPS.

If you have to have an SPD to get the label, just do it.

YMMV.

ONE option would be to consider The Lightning Protection Institute - Inspection Program.

http://www.lpi-ip.com/default.htm

They have two (2) inspection certifications that might be right for you:

Reconditioned Master Installation Certificate Inspection

A general certificate for inspections of lightning protection systems that have previously received an LPI-IP Master Certificate or equivalent, which has expired and where the square footage and/or the footprint of the structure has not changed since the last certification, for compliance with the standard specified during the application process. In the event that the square footage and/or footprint of the structure have changed, the structure is not eligible for an LPI-IP Reconditioned Master Certificate. A new LPI-IP Master Certificate or LPI-IP Limited Scope Inspection shall be required instead.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Limited Scope Inspection

An inspection for a portion of a lightning protection system specifically to review a limited scope of work as designated by the applicant. Issuance of a satisfactory Limited Scope Inspection Report shall be based upon, and limited to, the findings that relate to that portion of the lightning protection system inspected on a limited scope, and does not constitute certification that the entire system or structure has been inspected and/or is in compliance with LPI 175 or any other nationally-recognized code or standard.

In the event you wish to stick with the UL program & need help with the SPD requirement, check out this link for a bit of guidance:

I think this link might work better:

The select the document dated 01/21/2010 How to find Listed Surge Devices for Lightning Protection Systems

Or just go right to the list of the manufactures:

Hi Petersonra,

I think the SPD does too, but I guess this was an unforeseen expense. Oh well, I may have to explain this too the client.

If they have NOT had adverse experience with lightning in the area, I would leave well enough alone. If the existing system had protected them so far why would you expect it to be different now?

Need to understand that NO lightning protection system will offer 100% no strike guarantee Master Label notwithstanding.

Installing surge protection on the incoming service will be prudent addition to an existing lightning protection system.

I would present the cost of upgrading to current Master Labeling to the Client and highlighting that no certainty can be attributed to any system and that no quantitative or qualitative benefits can be assigned to the change and have him sign off on the decision. This will relive your(Company's) liability in either case.
