Is there an approved method other than a VFD to brake a motor? On a couple of our smaller machines we have a 5HP blower motor we need to stop in a hurry so we can reverse it. The method we use now is not UL approved.

Have you considered...

Have you considered...

Have you considered an Electric Brake Motor. There are various MFR's. This may be cheeper than adding DC injection for a 5HP blower. Load inertia may eliminate this as choice though.

I used to work on a printing press that would throw a big cabinet of water-cooled resistors across the line when the motor starter opened. That thing would stop on a dime. Other similar equipment just used Warner Electric brakes on a brake disk. That worked really well too, but there was PM involved with that.

The Benshaw DCB 3 is not UL listed.

The only one that I know of that is UL listed is the Motortronics ABC Sieries. Works fine, but be sure to put fuses in front of it even though they say it is just recommended, not required.

There used to be one other, called the Short-Stop D made by Ambitech, but Ambitech was bought out by TB Woods a few years ago, then last year TB Woods sold off their entire electrical division to Vacon, who does not show the Ambitech product any longer. It may have spun off further from Vacon, maybe some of their distributors know. The Ambitech product still shows up on some distributor's websites but their links for technical info get routed to TB Woods, who doesn't support it.
