i've heard that a ul listing is only good on that product for so many years , after that time period it should be replaced?

According to UL's website, the UL listing efffectively says the item was manufactured correctly. The UL listing is not affected by time.

A UL listing also only applies for what it was tested for, which may not be what you intend to use it for. Companies will get their products marked for anything when they aren't good for what they'd have you believe their intended use is. People see UL, UR, CSA, TUV, etc. and think it must be good. If it's made overseas, it could be just another decal with no testing to back it up.

1. The UL White Book gives General Guide Information for each product category that includes references to the requirements used for the investigation of the products and the UL Mark to be used on the product; information relating to limitations or special conditions applying to the product; the titles and designations of standards or requirements that have been used for the investigation of products in a specific product category. In my opinion, the UL White Book is the rest of your code book and nests with Section 110.3.

2. If you are in doubt, contact any division of UL and they will be happy to help you with verifying that the mark is genuine. :)

The average person -most persons- and the average electrician - most electricians - do not look at the White Book, even if they know about the book. That is my experience, so I agree with Megloff, in the sense that there are some products out there being used for a purpose other than the design purpose, and people see a listing label, and say..."but it is listed".

Until I joined this forum, I did not even know the White Book existed, and neither did any of my co-workers.
